Johnny Depp speaks out on 2022 Amber Heard defamation trial


Johnny Depp has spoken out on his legal battle against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star sued Heard in March 2019 over a column she wrote in 2018. The case went to trial in April 2022, streamed around the world.

Depp was awarded $US15 million (approx. $20.8 million) in damages.

In a new interview with the Sunday Times years later, Depp said he has “no regrets”.

“Look, none of this was going be easy, but I didn’t care,” he told the outlet.

“I thought, ‘I’ll fight until the bitter f—ing end.’ And if I end up pumping gas? That’s all right. I’ve done that before.”

Depp and Heard were married from 2015 to 2017. Heard filed for divorce in 2016.

Heard penned an op-ed in December 2018 for The Washington Post, speaking out on domestic abuse. Depp was not mentioned by name.

Depp then sued the actress for US$50 million (approx. $70 million) for defamation.

Heard filed a US$100 million (approx. $140 million) countersuit.

She was awarded $2 million in damages over Depp’s lawyer calling her abuse claim a “hoax”.

“Look, it had gone far enough,” Depp said of why he pursued legal action in the US.

“If I don’t try to represent the truth it will be like I’ve actually committed the acts I am accused of.

“And my kids will have to live with it. Their kids. Kids that I’ve met in hospitals.”

Depp shares daughter Lily-Rose, 26, and son Jack, 23, with ex Vanessa Paradis.

“So the night before the trial in Virginia I didn’t feel nervous. If you don’t have to memorise lines, if you’re just speaking the truth? Roll the dice,” he said.

In the interview, Depp claimed he was a “crash test dummy for MeToo”.

“I was pre #MeToo,” he said, adding it was before Harvey Weinstein. 

The MeToo movement gained momentum in 2017 after accusations against Weinstein.
