Leaders’ debate: Affordability and Canadian security top of mind during heated discussion

An agreement on border security

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Liberal Leader Mark Carney, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet outline what they perceive is the biggest security threat to Canada right now.

On crime and guns, Singh and Poilievre appeared to agree on something: increasing border security. But as Lucas noted, Singh said the Conservatives cut the number of border agents when they were in power. Poilievre said he would hire 2,000 border guards and “go after gun smugglers.”

“After you cut them, you want to rehire them,” Singh said. He said earlier that most violent crime in Canada is committed with illegal guns that come from south of the border.

Poilievre countered that the NDP and Liberals want to ban hunting rifles.

“I want to protect Canadians from criminals. The Liberals want to protect turkeys from hunters,” he said, repeating a line he’s used in his campaign.

Carney said he “fully supports the rights of hunters and Indigenous Canadians” on guns. He pivoted to saying he would make it a criminal offence to threaten community centres and places of worship.

Asked what the biggest threat to security in Canada is right now, Poilievre didn’t say Trump, answering instead that it’s “the rampant crime wave running out of control.”
