Andre De Grasse wins 200m at Florida Relays near training base


Canadian sprint star Andre De Grasse won the men’s 200-metre final at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday.

De Grasse, the reigning Olympic champion in the distance, won the race in a time of 20.32 seconds (-0.8 m/s wind), edging second-place finisher Robert Gregory of the United States by just four-tenths of a second.

The 30-year-old De Grasse hails from Markham, Ont., and now trains in Gainesville under coach Mike Holloway.

Ottawa’s Eliezer Adjib placed fifth in 20.80, while Austin Cole (21.03) of Sherwood Park, Alta., and William Batley (21.06) of Carp, Ont., finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Christopher Morales-Williams of Vaughan, Ont., was last among the 10 finishers, clocking 21.34.

De Grasse was also scheduled to compete in Saturday’s 4x100m relay alongside Adjib, Edmonton’s Malachi Murray and Ajax, Ont., native Duan Asemota.
