Brooke Shields forgot a very important detail as she prepared her mum’s cremation after her death in 2012.
It’s a morbidly funny memory the supermodel and actress, 60, says she will “never get over”.
In conversation with Monica Lewinsky on her podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinksy, Shields recalled the story she says is equal parts horrific and hysterical.

After her mother Teri Shields died, Brooke attended the morgue to get her affairs in order ahead of the funeral and cremation.
“I remember being the only one in the room having to go view my mum’s body and she didn’t have any relatives, I mean, not that she spoke to,” she recalled.
Before attending the morgue, the Blue Lagoon star had picked out a shirt for her mother, deliberating between two options.
”There were two shirts, both leopard print, she loved animal prints, she was in that phase of her life,” she explained.
One shirt, Brooke recalls was a “really nice silk one by Dolce & Gabbana”, while the other was a “shitty cotton one”.

Initially, she intended to opt for the nicer shirt for her mum to be cremated in but then had a change of heart.
“I started with the nice one, I was like, ‘I’m going to cremate you in something really nice’,” she said.
“And then I was like, ‘No I’m not, I’m going to keep the silk one that’s Dolce & Gabbana and I’m going to put her in the [other one], it’s going to get burned anyway,'” she said.
It seems Brooke put so much mental energy into picking out a shirt for her mum that she forgot another important clothing item.
“All of a sudden it occurs to me, ‘Oh my god, I don’t remember picking out pants for her, I just picked out a shirt’,” she recalled.

“All of a sudden I was like, ‘No. Oh no’.
She looked around the room in a frenzy, trying to figure out what to do, realising she couldn’t possibly send her mum off sans pants.
Perhaps Teri already had pants on, Brooke thought.
“I was like, ‘Well, you gotta look’ right? So I go and I lift up the blanket with the plastic. She’s got no pants on!” Brooke recalled, laughing.
”And I was like, ‘That might be the funniest most horrific thing I have ever witnessed in my entire life and I’ll never get over it.’

“But it was so funny when I encountered it, in my mind it was horror and hysterical at the same time.”
Brooke’s morbidly funny story came about as she and Lewinksy discussed the value of dark humour in difficult times.
“Humour is one of our biggest saviours in difficult times,” Lewinksy said.

Brooke agreed and credited her late mum for her love of humour.
”I miss the laughing that we had together. Humour is what I have retained from her,” she said.
Teri Shields died on October 31, 2012 at aged 72 due to an illness related to dementia.
