Ford calls on Carney to fast-track Ontario resource projects after Liberal election win

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney after the Liberal Party’s federal election win and said he looked forward to working with him in a statement on Tuesday — particularly when it comes to mining the province’s critical mineral supply.

“Ontario stands ready to work with the federal government to unleash our economy by cutting red tape so we can make Canada’s economy more competitive, resilient and self-reliant, capable of withstanding tariffs and whatever challenges may come our way,” Ford said in a Tuesday news release.

He also thanked Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh “and every candidate who put their name on a ballot for their service to our democracy,” the statement read.

Both Poilievre and Singh lost their seats in Monday’s election, though the Conservative leader has said he intends to stay on.

Ford called on Carney to “fulfill his commitment” to speed up critical mineral and other resource development projects, particularly in the Ring of Fire in northwestern Ontario.

He also asked Carney to support Ontario on future nuclear energy projects and “nation-building infrastructure,” including pipelines, highways, railways and airports.

Ontario is committed to working with the federal government, as well as the provinces and territories, to strike down internal trade barriers, he said.

Infrastructure projects in the province will “help Canadian goods reach new customers in new markets while binding our country together and reducing our reliance on the United States,” the statement read.

Ford also repeated his consistent calls for federal bail reform, asking Carney to “take violent, repeat offenders off our streets.”

Premier hasn’t responded to Conservative MP’s election night barbs

The premier’s statement did not address heated comments made by Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, made in an interview with CBC News after he was reelected in Bowmanville-Oshawa North on Monday.

Jivani called Ford a “problem” for Ontario and the country, saying that he interfered with how the Conservative party ran their election campaign.

“He couldn’t stay out of our business, always getting his criticism and all his opinions out… trying to position himself as some kind of political genius that we need to be taking cues out,” Jivani said.

“Prime Minister Carney’s leadership will be critical as we stand strong against President Trump’s tariffs and fight for a Canada that’s fair, resilient, and ready for the future,” the post read.

Crombie added that she’s looking forward “to the fight ahead as we work to grow and strengthen our Liberal family.”
