Harry Potter reboot: Hagrid actor vows one thing to fans ahead of remake

The star about to take on a beloved Harry Potter character in the forthcoming reboot has vowed one thing to fans.

In case you haven’t heard, Harry Potter is getting a fresh adaptation with an HBO television series in the works, expected to come out next year.

Many of the stars of the series have already been announced – including actor Nick Frost, who will step into the shoes of Hagrid, as originally played by the late Robbie Coltrane in the movies.

In a new interview with Collider, Frost said he is “never going to try and be” Coltrane.

“You get cast because you’re going to bring something to that,” the actor told the outlet.

“While I’m really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie’s amazing performance, I’m never going to try and be Robbie.

“I’m going to try and do something, not ‘different,’ I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter, but within that, there’s scope for minutiae.”

Speaking of the beloved character, Frost said he’d “always read Hagrid as he’s like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child.”

While the original movie franchise had eight installments (the last book was adapted into two parts), the new series is structuring each season to centre around one book, totalling seven seasons if it goes to plan.

“I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can’t wait,” Frost continued, calling his character “funny”.

“I want it to be funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike. That’s what I’m planning on doing.”

Frost was announced to be playing Hagrid in the reboot in April.

The star celebrated the casting news with a photo of him with J.K Rowling’s novel, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, which the first season of the show will adapt.

“Thank you for trusting me with such a loyal, gentle and courageous half-giant like Rubeus Hagrid. Robbie, I promise I won’t let you down,” Frost wrote.

Frost joins others stars in the reboot including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall.

Last month, HBO announced the unknown child actors who will play the iconic leading trio – Harry, Ron and Hermione.

The reboot news has faced some mixed reviews and criticism.

Lithgow addressed concerns over being an American playing Professor Dumbledore.

The star said being cast was “an enormous thrill.”

“But I know there were plenty of people appalled that an American should be hired to play the ultimate English wizard. But, I will do my best.”
