James Blunt interview: Singer won’t be making music at 99 as he pays tribute to ‘remarkable human being’ David Attenborough | Exclusive

David Attenborough is releasing a new film as he marks his 99th birthday this week.

And it’s something singer James Blunt is in awe of but not something he aspires to in his own career.

When asked at the world premiere of Ocean With David Attenborough on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) if he has plans to still make music at 99 the singer’s response was, well, blunt.

“I don’t think I will,” he tells 9honey Celebrity on the blue carpet in London.

“So, I think he’s a remarkable human being … His voice is so recognisable, the stories he has told us, the places he has taken us.

“So, yeah, [it’s] very special to celebrate his birthday here and to watch this amazing film.”

The singer says the broadcaster is “like a grandfather to our nation, probably your nation, too” and is very personally invested in Attenborough’s “save the planet” message.

“My wife works in the Blue Marine Foundation, who are sponsoring tonight in some way and really, as a result of that, I’ve been party to the damage the human race has done,” he says.

“We live in the Mediterranean and we can see the damage that we’ve done there.

“I dive with a man called Manu San Félix, who took photographs for National Geographic, and his stories are just remarkable really.

“He came in the ’70s where the Mediterranean sea had only hit 26 degrees maximum and this year, the Mediterranean, at its hottest, hit 32 degrees which is very frightening.

“And we can see that with a lack of fish and diversity, and the overfishing is just very evident. So yeah, this film [is] an important one.”

Blunt and his wife Sofia Wellesley have two sons but tells 9honey Celebrity he doesn’t “talk at anyone”, even his kids, when it comes to instilling the environmental message.

“I tour the world and my global carbon footprint is huge and I would be hypocritical to think I could talk at anyone but I do try and inform myself and try and work through a problem,” Blunt says.
