Jeremy Renner memoir: actor explains why he didn’t want snowplough accident in book

Marvel star Jeremy Renner almost died on New Year’s Day 2023 during a horrific snowplough accident at home.

The 54-year-old has spent over two years recovering, but while promoting his new memoir titled My Next Breath recently he revealed that he didn’t want to include the details of the accident, which he references in the author’s note.

“I had written most of the book at that point. But I really wanted to voice why I didn’t want to write it, because I just didn’t think it was valuable,” Renner said during an appearance on CBS Mornings

“I lived it. It was a private incident that happened in my driveway. Why does anybody care about it?”

In the author’s note he expressed that he didn’t want to “write this book” and relieve the horrific accident.

But now looking back, the actor has reflected on what it actually taught him about himself to include the details and why he’s glad he did it now.

“But the act of writing it is – what I want people to take away from the book [is] getting out of your own way is quite important to achieve and get anything you want in your life, and that’s the lesson that I had to learn to get of my own way and share the story because I knew it was valuable,” he added.

“It would be silly of me not to share it.”

Renner, who is best known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, broke over 30 bones, suffered a lacerated liver, collapsed lung and was left in a critical condition when he was hit and crushed by a snowplow at his home.

The actor tried to jump out of it when it began rolling towards his nephew, but was crushed by the tracks.

When asked by CBS Mornings to give a “sense” of what he experienced during the accident, Renner explained that’s why he didn’t want to write the book.

It took 45 minutes for him to get help, and it’s been over two years of recovery, but the actor said it was breathing which helped him through it – thus the title of the memoir.

“So that part just saved me: zooming out, focusing on just breathing. Because if I wasn’t going to breathe, it didn’t matter that my eyeball is out of my head, my legs were all twisted up like a pretzel,” he said.

“Doesn’t matter. I’ll worry about that later. You’ve gotta breathe first. If you don’t, I’m passing out and then my body’s not going to breathe, organ failure and then I’m dead.”

His memoir, My Next Breath, is out now.
