Jodie Foster reveals why she turned down cameo in 2025 Freaky Friday sequel Freakier Friday

Despite being “begged” to join the sequel, Jodie Foster turned down a cameo role in the new Freaky Friday sequel. She has now explained why.

In a recent interview with Variety ahead of the Cannes premiere of her latest film Vie Privée, a French thriller, Foster, 62, explained her decision to turn down the cameo.

“I was busy doing this movie,” she said, referring to the new French film.

“But Jamie Lee Curtis is a really good friend of mine. I followed the shoot and all that stuff.”

The actor famously starred in the original Disney version of Freaky Friday as a child in 1976 alongside Barbara Harris.

Almost three decades later, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan starred opposite one another in the 2003 Freaky Friday and are this year returning to their roles for sequel Freakier Friday.

In April, the sequel’s director Nisha Ganatra revealed that Jodie Foster had been asked to make a cameo in the new film but declined.

“We begged her,” Ganatra told Entertainment Weekly.

“She’s not going to do it.”

While Foster won’t make an appearance, the new film is set for a US release this August.

Last March, Disney confirmed that production for the highly anticipated sequel was underway.

The film will see Curtis and Lohan return to their roles as the mother-daughter duo, Tess and Anna.

Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray have also signed on, alongside several new cast members.

When casting for the 2003 film was underway, Foster was the first pick for the role of Anna’s straight-laced mum, Tess.

The film’s director originally wanted to cast her off the back of her role in the original Freaky Friday movie.

Foster turned the role down, then it was offered to Annette Bening. Curtis only took on the role at the last minute when Bening dropped out.

The final casting appeared to be the right call as the film went onto become a fan-favourite and achieve massive commercial success.

Jamie Lee Curtis almost missed out on Freaky Friday role

Meanwhile, Foster’s decisions to turn down the 2003 Freaky Friday and the 2025 Freakier Friday comes down to the actor being very particular about the roles she takes on.

“I’m picky,” she admitted in conversation with Variety.

“I’m not really interested in acting just for the sake of acting. It has to really speak to me.”
