A major Taylor Swift rumour has been confirmed with just eight words.
Since the release of The Tortured Poets Department in April 2024, fans have been wondering who the “Lucy” named in the song’s title track could be.
For those unfamiliar with the song, fans have speculated it to be about Swift’s rumoured fling with Matty Healy.

In one verse, Swift sings, “Sometimes, I wonder if you’re gonna screw this up with me / But you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen / Everyone we know understands why it’s meant to be / ‘Cause we’re crazy.”

Upon the album’s release, fans immediately made two connections; one was that the Jack mentioned was likely Swift’s long-term collaborator and friend, Jack Antonoff, and two, that the Lucy mentioned was most likely Swift’s friend and member of Boygenius, Lucy Dacus.

However, neither had been confirmed. That is, until now.
In a new interview with People, Lucy Dacus opened up about the track and her role in bringing it to life.
“I think it’s fair game to say ‘yes’,” Dacus confirmed when asked if she was in fact the Lucy in question.
“She [Swift] actually texted me and asked for my approval,” Dacus added.
The Night Shift singer recalled the first time she listened to the album, explaining that it was the first record Swift had released since the pair became friends.
“Listening to a friend’s record feels so much different than a stranger’s record,” Dacus explained.

“So I was like, ‘This is really weird. This voice that I’ve heard basically what feels like my whole waking life saying my name’.
“It was definitely an experience,” she continued.
“I sat down and I was like, ‘Huh. Wow.’ But I think that that record of hers is super open-hearted, and I don’t know how many people at her level, if anyone is at her level, are writing from the heart that openly.”
