Matt Bomer reflects on ‘unfair’ experience of being outed by tabloids in new interview comments


Matt Bomer came out as gay in a public speech back in 2012, thanking his publicist partner Simon Halls and their family at the at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards.

The Magic Mike and White Collar star, 47, has now candidly spoken about the rumours and speculation around his sexuality that he had endured as someone in the public eye.

Speaking to Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast, Bomer, 47, said things felt “unfair” to him as others were “taking over his own personal narrative”.

“It was that time when folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance to,” he recalled about the media outlets and rumours.

“Talking about my personal life before I had ever had a chance to even do it myself. And it wasn’t because I didn’t want to. I didn’t even have an opportunity to.”

Bomer said it was a “weird time” and the chance to do things on his own terms and timing was “stolen”.

“No media outlet was ever going like, ‘Hey!’ I just didn’t have a career that warranted that,” he explained.

“And so it felt kind of unfair to me, that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time. It was a weird time.”

He also spoke about his 2012 speech and said “it was perfect”.

Speaking about the potential of a fallout from the revelation, he said his “loving family was my safety net”.

He also praised his partner Halls during the chat, saying how good a father he is to their children.

Bomer and Halls quietly married back in 2011.

Last year, he reportedly told The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast alleged he missed out on the role of Superman in the 2000s, in a film, due to his sexuality.

He previously told People about his marriage: “[My grandparents] just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary, so I always look to them and I see how every day they express their love for each other and I try to follow.”

“They’ve set a pretty good model for me to follow,” he said.
