Miley Cyrus has opened up about her relationship with her family, including what caused their rift and welcoming her parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus‘ new partners.
In an interview with The New York Times, the 32-year-old shared the real reason behind the Cyrus family feud for the first time – her parent’s 2022 divorce.

”As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents – because my mum’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” she said, speaking of her parents.
The Climb singer seemed to have sided with her mother in the split, with the star now sharing, “I think I took on some of my mum’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
Tish filed for divorce from Billy Ray in 2022 after nearly 30 years of marriage and three children together – Miley, 32, Braison, 30, and Noah, 25. Billy Ray also adopted Tish’s two children from her previous marriage, Brandi, 37, and Trace, 36.

Since the split, Tish moved on with Aussie actor Dominic Purcell, wedding him in 2023, while Billy Ray moved on with Aussie singer Firerose, marrying her in October 2023 but divorcing her just seven months later in August 2024.
Miley shared how she felt seeing her parents pursue new love, telling the outlet, “Now that my mum is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too – I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,” adding that she’s “being an adult about it”.
“At first it’s hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, ‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy,'” she said of Billy Ray, who is currently dating actress and model Liz Hurley.

It comes as Miley broke her silence about the years-long family feud for the first time weeks ago on Instagram.
The 32-year-old took to her Instagram stories on May 10 to clear up the confusion, sharing a black photo with a wall of text.
“I rarely comment on rumours, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us,” she wrote, days after her mother Tish Cyrus allegedly unfollowed her on social media, resulting in speculation about their bond.

“She’s my best friend. Like a lot of mums, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me – simple, coincidental and uninteresting.”
The Flowers singer also shared insight on her relationship with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years,” Miley said of her 63-year-old father.

“Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.”
“Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family,” she concluded her statement.
