Teen hiker dead after fall down 60-metre cliff north of Salmon Arm, B.C.

A 17-year-old is dead after falling down a cliff while hiking in B.C.’s Interior, according to police.

RCMP said the teen boy was hiking with two friends on Monday evening when he “disappeared” off a 60-metre cliff on Bastion Mountain, north of Salmon Arm in B.C.’s Shuswap region. Police said he was walking ahead of his friends when he slipped and fell.

The father of one of the other hikers found the boy, who was not responsive, at the bottom of the cliff, police said Tuesday. A local search and rescue team rappelled down to the boy and confirmed he had died.

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating, according to the RCMP.

“This is another tragic event that will greatly affect our community,” Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Simon Scott said in a news release. “We’re deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young life. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and all those impacted by this devastating event.”

The teen’s death comes just a few days after a 28-year-old hiker died after falling several hundred metres on Mount Seymour, north of Vancouver.
